Criteria:
The applicant must:
- Be a Female
- Have a 2.5 GPA or higher
- Major in Nursing or a health-related field
- Actively participate in a ministry at The Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church or community
Essay Requirement:
The application must be submitted with a minimum 500-spaced essay (typed and double-spaced) addressing the following question: What do you consider to be an important public health issue in the African American community? Why?
Background:
The LaRue Wilson Memorial Scholarship was established in 2024 to recognize and support young women pursuing a postsecondary nursing education. Nurses are critical to society’s spiritual and physical health, recovery, and well-being. For over 40 years, LaRue dedicated her life to serving others as a servant leader nurse in her local church and as a National Baptist Convention Nurses Auxiliary member. This scholarship is intended to encourage and assist young women with educational expenses within a two- or four-year program in Nursing or a health-related field of study.
La Rue Wilson was a beloved, beautiful woman who mentored and supported thousands of people throughout her life. She often quoted 1Cornnthians 13: “ Love is patient, Love is kind” LaRue Wilson received her wings in 2021 and is greatly missed by those her life has impacted. This scholarship is a part of her legacy to support and love those who seek to help others.
