Criteria:
The applicant must:
- Be a student who has relocated to the Atlanta metropolitan area, preferably from Maryland but other states will be considered
- Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Plan to major in Criminal Justice or Education.
- Enroll as a full-time student at an accredited HBCU.
- Have a warm and engaging personality
- Must be a member of the Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church
Essay Requirement:
The application must be submitted with a minimum 250-spaced essay (typed and double-spaced) addressing the following: What are your Proposed Solutions to Gun Violence in the Black Community?
Background:
On June 27, 2024, sixteen-year-old Juan Roach III was gunned down in his neighborhood in Suitland, Maryland. His family was devastated. To keep his name alive, his paternal great-grandparents, Susan and Juanito Roach, want to assist a graduating high school senior in fulfilling their dreams of going to college since Juan, III will never have this opportunity.
His paternal grandparents are both retired school educators who lived in Maryland before retiring and moving to the Atlanta metro area.
