Background:

This award was established in 2026 to assist and recognize a student who exhibits intellectual curiosity and a strong commitment to learning about the African American heritage.

Black history is one of the most important subjects our children can study. It plays a vital role in the development of a child’s character and provides essential context for understanding present-day realities and future possibilities. It helps children understand who they are and appreciate the rich and proud heritage from which they came.

Unfortunately, Black history is often absent from school curricula, and when it is included, it is sometimes inaccurately presented or rewritten. A child who independently seeks to learn the true history of their past demonstrates initiative, intellectual curiosity, and strong character. Such effort reflects a deep commitment to self-knowledge and should be acknowledged and rewarded.

The recipient of this award will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of Black history during the scholarship interview.
